Safe crackers can use a number of different tactics to gain entrance into your safe. Like most people, they will try the easiest method first.
It might surprise you to know that the most common as well as the easiest way safecrackers crack safes is by knowing the combination to the safe. And it’s actually not that hard to find out.
You see, safes come with a combination that is preset by the factory. The manufacturers assume that the purchaser will reset the preset combination with their own unique combination of numbers. A lot of people who buy safes think that the preset number was either randomly generated or that it is unique in one way or another, when it’s not.
The preset numbers are industry standards that are used by a lot of different manufacturers. So, when a safecracker finds these numbers (and remember that it’s his or her “job” to find out this information) he or she will be able to gain ready access to a ton of safes.
Therefore, when you buy a safe, it’s really important that you change the combination to your own set of numbers as soon as the safe is delivered to your home or office.
When you’re resetting your combination you should try to think like a safecracker. That’s because the second easiest way for a safecracker to break into your safe is to find or to figure out your combination.
All too many folks write their combination down and keep it near the safe. So if you’re keeping it on a scrap of paper that you’re hiding in a book on or near the safe, or if you are planning to put it in your desk drawer, then it’s good as advertising your combination number with skywriting.
If the safecracker can’t find the combination he or she will try to deduce it. A lot of people use an important date, such as a birthday or anniversary as the combination to their safe. Don’t be one of them!
If the safecracker has access to information about you then it will be very easy to find out these dates. And one way to access that information is by looking at the dates you may have circled on the calendar on your desk.
After you have decided on a random number for your safe you may want to write it down under a fake name in your address book. Make a note of it so that it looks like an email address or a phone number.
Also, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep a copy of your in an email in your private email account – one that only you have access to. And again, disguise its purpose before you send it to yourself.
And remember, if you do this that you should make sure that the password you use to get your emails is also a random combination of letters and numbers that only you know.
